Sea stars, often referred to as starfish, are marine invertebrates characterized by their distinctive star-shaped bodies. Belonging to the class Asteroidea within the phylum Echinodermata, these fascinating creatures inhabit oceans worldwide, from intertidal zones to deep-sea habitats. Sea stars typically have five arms radiating from a central disc, although some species can have more arms. They move using tube feet located on their underside and are known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs. Sea stars are carnivorous predators, feeding on mollusks, small fish, and other marine organisms. Despite their name, sea stars are not fish but are closely related to sea urchins and sand dollars.
