Stratified Epithelium is a three-dimensional model of type of tissue composed of multiple layers of cells stacked on top of each other. Stratified epithelium is a tissue type characterized by several layers of cells. Its primary function is to protect underlying tissues in areas of high abrasion and mechanical stress, such as the skin, oral cavity, and vagina. The cells in the basal layer are typically cuboidal or columnar and undergo constant mitosis, pushing older cells towards the surface, where they are eventually shed or worn away. This structure provides protection against physical and chemical wear and tear. Found in areas subject to friction and abrasion, such as the skin, mouth, and esophagus, stratified epithelium can be keratinized (containing keratin for added protection) or non-keratinized, depending on its location and function.
