Phocoena sinus, commonly known as the vaquita, is a small porpoise species found exclusively in the upper Gulf of California. Sadly, this marine mammal faces an alarming risk of extinction primarily due to bycatch in illegal fishing gear. Vaquitas, distinguished by their dark facial markings, have experienced a rapid population decline, with estimates suggesting less than 10 individuals remaining in the wild. Measuring around 5 feet in length, these elusive creatures navigate the shallow waters, but their future survival hangs precariously in the balance without immediate and robust conservation efforts.
