Sadly, this marine mammal faces an alarming risk of extinction primarily due to bycatch in illegal fishing gear. Vaquitas, distinguished by their dark facial markings, have experienced a rapid population decline, with estimates suggesting less than 10 individuals remaining in the wild. Measuring around 5 feet in length, these elusive creatures navigate the shallow waters, but their future survival hangs precariously in the balance without immediate and robust conservation efforts.
