It is one of several species of periodical cicadas, which are known for their synchronized emergence in large numbers every 13 or 17 years, depending on the species. The periodical cicada spends the majority of its life underground, feeding on the sap of tree roots. After 13 or 17 years, the nymphs of the cicada emerge from the ground en masse, typically in late spring or early summer. The emergence of the cicadas is synchronized, meaning that all of the insects in a given area will emerge at the same time.
