A cicada is an insect known for its loud, distinctive buzzing or clicking sound. There are over 3,000 species of cicadas, found in various regions around the world. Cicadas are typically characterized by their stout bodies, large eyes, and clear, membranous wings. Cicadas are known for their unique life cycle. After hatching from eggs, the young cicadas, known as nymphs, burrow underground where they feed on tree roots. Depending on the species, the nymphs may remain underground for several years before emerging as adults.
Once they emerge from the ground, adult cicadas live for a relatively short period of time, typically around two to four weeks. During this time, the males produce their characteristic buzzing sound in order to attract mates.
