Lophius piscatorius, also known as the monkfish, is a species native to the coastal waters of the North Atlantic. This fish possesses a distinctive appearance, featuring a broad, flattened head and a large mouth armed with numerous sharp teeth. The most intriguing aspect of the monkfish is its adaptation for hunting—using a modified dorsal fin ray as a fishing lure, which dangles a bulbous growth (esca) above its mouth. The esca emits bioluminescent light, attracting prey to the waiting anglerfish.
