The pigeye shark, also known as the Java shark (Carcharhinus amboinensis), is a species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Its name comes from its notably small eyes relative to its body size. This shark typically inhabits coastal areas, including estuaries and river mouths. Its slender body and long, pointed snout are characteristic features. Pigeye sharks primarily feed on small fish, crustaceans, and squid. Despite being harmless to humans, they are sometimes caught as bycatch in fisheries. Their conservation status is currently considered of least concern, but they may face threats due to habitat loss and overfishing.
