It is the smallest of the continent's bear species but has the widest distribution, ranging from Canada to Mexico. Black bears have varied fur colors, including black, brown, and occasionally white. They are omnivorous, with diets consisting of fruits, nuts, insects, and small mammals. Known for their climbing ability and speed, they can reach 35 mph. During winter, black bears hibernate in dens, relying on fat reserves built up in the fall.
