The extinct Gigantopithecus genus included the largest apes to ever live, existing from 2 million to about 300,000 years ago in what is now Southeast Asia. Fossil evidence, including large molars, indicates these apes stood up to 10 feet tall and weighed over 1,000 pounds. Adapted to forested environments, they likely fed on bamboo. The cooling climate and changes in vegetation are thought to have caused their decline.
