Alcatraz (The Rock) was considered to be one of the toughest and most secure prisons in the world, with inmates held in isolation for up to 23 hours a day. The prison housed some of the most notorious criminals of the time, including George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Al Capone, and Robert Stroud, also known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz." Today, the former prison is a well known tourist attraction and is managed by the National Park Service. Alcatraz prison visitors can tour the jail and learn about its history and the lives of the inmates who were once held there.
